Challenging Power with Sharp Satire
Zaub Qaub exists to challenge power, question narratives, and illuminate the immigrant experience through cultural satire and political commentary. We believe humor—especially satire—has always been one of the most effective tools for speaking truth when direct language is ignored, dismissed, or punished.
Our mission is simple:
to tell uncomfortable truths in a way that cuts through noise, exposes absurdity, and invites reflection—whether the reader agrees with us or not.
The name Zaub Qaub, meaning fermented or pickled greens in Hmong culture, reflects our philosophy. Like the dish itself, our work is intentionally sharp, deeply rooted, and not designed to please everyone. Fermentation takes time, patience, and lived experience—much like the stories we tell. What begins as sour often becomes refreshing, clarifying, and sustaining once understood.
Zaub Qaub was created from the perspective of immigrant and refugee communities—particularly Southeast Asian voices shaped by displacement, war, resettlement, and generational survival. These stories are often spoken about, but rarely spoken from. Satire allows us to flip that dynamic: to hold institutions, systems, and cultural hypocrisy up to the light without asking permission.
Our values guide every piece we publish:
- Truth over comfort – We prioritize honesty, even when it challenges popular narratives or polite silence.
- Cultural specificity – Our humor is rooted in lived experience, not stereotypes or borrowed pain.
- Accountability through humor – We believe satire can expose power without becoming cruel, lazy, or misinformed.
- Independence of voice – Zaub Qaub operates as an independent platform, free from political affiliation or corporate influence.
- Awareness with intention – Our goal is not outrage for clicks, but clarity that leads to conversation and understanding.
Zaub Qaub is not here to tell readers what to think. We are here to make it harder not to think.
Through parody articles, cultural commentary, and political satire, we aim to create space for marginalized voices, challenge systems that rely on silence, and remind readers that humor has always been a form of resistance.
If our work feels sharp, that’s intentional.
If it feels familiar, you’ve probably lived it.
And if it feels uncomfortable—good. That’s usually where truth starts to ferment.
